Thanks for all the postitive comments and I'm glad this has saved so many people a lot of money in unecessary repairs! Very odd. They told me that something gone wrong during an update and this is a typical windows 8, 8.1 problem. I am the sole user and administrator on this laptop, so I should have permission to use everything.
