Microsoft do seem to be persuing a strange business plan, which is to annoy as many people as possible with their new products. My wife has been using WIM 2012 for quite a while. Also, it's not POP3 or IMAP that's relevant here but the method WLM is using to communicate with the server (DeltaSync before KB3093594 update, EAS after).
